Tane Mahuta the king of Sea Creatures and the Seven Mermaids.
Hooray!! Early in the morning the seven Mermaids were swimming around in the deep blue sea having fun.The Mermaids got really hungry and went looking for snapper. When they caught the snapper they cooked it in the fire under water.
After the Mermaids finished eating they heard Tane Mahuta the King of sea creatures coming.
They tried to hide, but Tane kidnapped the seven Mermaids because he wanted to eat them.
The Mermaids tried to beg Tane to let them go. Tane screamed, “ No! You’re mine to eat!”
The Mermaids tried to trick him.One of them pretended to be sick and they tried to get the keys off Tane,but it didn’t work.
Finally, they escaped by picking the lock with one of the Mermaids hair clips. They escaped from the cage.
Now they were free at last. The Mermaids ask for protection from the God of the Ocean.
Tane disappeared into the deep blue sea, but Tane returned and grabbed hold of the seven Mermaids and threw them so high into the sky, that they became the seven stars of Matariki. Every year the mermaids shine so bright that you can see them and remember them.
